Targets:
Be inspired
Broaden your horizon
Open your mind
We will be joined by inspiring people who have created change. Meet them and experience what drives them, what their impulses were, how they surmounted barriers by believing in a better future. The speakers are people who unlock our imagination with a story, people who speak from their own intrinsic motivation.
Learn
Targets:
Walk future proof paths
Learn how to get it done
Become a change-agent
In interactive sessions, you will learn about a number of current renewal projects or processes. You will get insight in the development of projects, how they were set up, how they fought barriers… You will be teached tools and tricks to get started.
Topics:
- Together we can change the weather: Collaboration within higher education and with external stakeholders is necessary to achieve steps forward in sustainable challenges. Within this topic we focus on collaboration, co-creation, inter- and transdisciplinarity, community-building, service learning, living labs...
- Interventions in educational settings: How can we recondition education to become education for sustainable development? We focus on transforming learning environments and building educators’ capacities
- Wicked problems tackled: How can higher education and research play a role in dealing with wicked problems? How did you embrace complexity and uncertainty to strengthen your education and research?
- State of the art: Creating space for experiments and innovation is important in higher education. Within this topic we focus on innovative projects that are already unexpectedly, breaking through barriers or hacking problems in the traditional (educational) systems. We let people speak who managed to find creative ways of rethinking the box.
- The force of policy: Within this topic we take a look at the force of policy in higher education and external policy makers. How can policy create a pathway for positive change? How can the barriers impeding this change be overcome?

Throw ideas on the table
Refine them together
In interactive sessions, you will learn about a number of current renewal projects or processes. We resume our ideas on shaping the future during working sessions or one-to-one conversations, where we can further refine ideas.
Friday 19th October 2018
Escape
Dive into Brussels and discover its many faces.
A Visit to the Cantillon Brewery, beer tasting included (9:30 - 11:00 AM)
Grab the opportunity to visit this unique local brewery, firmly anchored in its Brussels ‘terroir’. One of the head-brewers will guide you personally through the brewery, answer all your questions and share a glass of four different Cantillon beers for you to taste. You will see first hand how the whole chain of production is as ecologically sustainable and ‘circular’ as possible.
- Meeting point: Cantillon brewery - Gheudestraat 56, 1071 Brussel (Anderlecht)
A guided tour of Molenbeek (11 AM - 1 PM)
Molenbeek is not the no-go zone it is sometimes portrayed to be. We will witness the dynamics of urbanisation at play and look at how the local community works at building a sustainable and essentially viable future.- We start our walk at the Cantillon Brewery - Gheuderstraat 56, 1070 Brussel (Anderlecht). We finish our walk in Le Phare du Kanaal where we will have lunch (Quai des charbonnages, 40-1080 Bruxelles).
Lunch in Le Phare du Kanaal (1 PM – 2PM)
We have lunch in Le Phare du Kanaal, a café and restaurant in Molenbeek ((Quai des charbonnages, 40-1080 Bruxelles).
Le Phare defends values we believe in: local artisanal goods, short supply chain, organic. Everything you will eat or drink is selected and made carefully to taste the best.
Some Ideas for the afternoon - not guided
- A Visit to the KANAL – Centre Pompidou Museum
Very new and equally fresh, the ambition of KANAL – Centre Pompidou is to offer a centre of culture and exchange open to all, to put the creative scene of Brussels in the limelight, and to contribute to the capital’s cultural appeal. The museum has a ten-year partnership with the Centre Pompidou in Paris. - A visit to the MIMA
Founded in April 2016 along the Canal in Brussels, the MIMA’s mission is to be the defining museum of contemporary art.
The MIMA presents the most significant art of its time, and explores a history of culture 2.0. A visit to la Fonderie
La Fonderie, Brussels Museum of Industry and Labour is a museum about the Industrial Revolution in Brussels, Belgium. It collects objects, documents and oral history on the city’s industrial past and visualises the working history of Brussel
